Secretary Kerry met today with 10 leading Afghan women journalists, demonstrating his commitment to helping them retain and expand their impact and influence during the post-2014 political and security transition.

The journalists are participating in an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) that explores how the United States promotes women’s empowerment and the role that the media plays in focusing attention on social causes.

In addition to their visit to Washington, D.C., the women will travel to New York City, Salt Lake City, and Tampa/St. Petersburg to discuss such issues as the relationship between media and government, personal safety when reporting in conflict zones, and the role of media in promoting awareness of human and women’s rights. They will also meet with members of the U.S.–Afghan Women’s Council and will participate in a media workshop at the Poynter Institute.

IVLP is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. For further information, please contact the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at eca-press@state.gov.
