Montgomery County to Launch Operation Green Light Initiative to Support Local Veterans
FONDA-- In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort announced that Montgomery County office buildings will be illuminated green November 7 through the 13 as part of Operation Green Light, a new collaborative initiative to support veterans of all military conflicts, raise awareness about the challenges veterans face and what resources are available to assist them.
“We are always looking for ways to show support and gratitude towards our veterans and their families,” said Ossenfort. “We also want them to be aware of the resources available to them, not only at the local level, but state and federal as well. I’m proud of our team for being so enthusiastic about taking part in this initiative.”
Operation Green Light was developed by the NYS Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association.
District Attorney Lorraine Diamond, who is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps stated, “Operation Green Light hits home for our office as our team member ADA Bill Berger served in Afghanistan from June 2003 – April 2004. This office proudly stands in solidarity with our fellow veterans and their families.”
Director and accredited Veterans' Service Officer Randy Weaver, who is a veteran of the United States Army, stated, “Montgomery County is home to approximately 3,300 Veterans and their families. The Montgomery County Veterans Service Agency provides assistance to veterans and their families and helps veterans navigate the Veterans Affairs health care and benefits system. We also provide transportation to the Albany and Fonda VA Medical Centers, food and clothing donations and indigent burials. Our team is here to support veterans throughout the county. Let us never forget the sacrifice our Veterans made in support of this great nation.”
In addition to lighting county buildings, residents are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends.
